Humboldt Village is a group of people working together in Humboldt County to develop stronger community inter-relationships with the resilience we will need to help us face uncertain times.

With roots in the Occupy Movement, Humboldt Village developed as a working group in local community alternative economic systems. Understanding that this encompassed a broken economic system predicated on mass consumerism, the results of which are gluttonous fossil fuel product consumption that is threatening the very planet that hosts our life, a small group set out to change the systems locally to create a more hospitable, compassionate and sustainable community. The group met the Transition Towns Movement, originating in the UK, and saw many similarities in concerns and an outline of sensible community actions. Used as a framework, Humboldt Village is implementing community projects toward the goals of manifesting resilient community projects throughout Humboldt County that demonstrate better ecologically balanced and economically and socially responsible communities where everyone may have opportunities to thrive. We agree with Transition Town’s Cheerful Disclaimer:

Just in case you were under the impression that Transition is a process defined by people who have all the answers, you need to be aware of a key fact.

We truly don’t know if this will work. Transition is a social experiment on a massive scale.

What we are convinced of is this:

  • If we wait for the governments, it’ll be too little, too late
  • If we act as individuals, it’ll be too little
  • But if we act as communities, it might just be enough, just in time.

Everything that you read on this site is the result of real work undertaken in the real world with community engagement at its heart. This site, just like the transition model, is brought to you by people who are actively engaged in transition in a community. People who are learning by doing – and learning all the time. People who understand that we can’t sit back and wait for someone else to do the work. People like you.

We are working to make this, our interim web site, more current and complete.

Some day soon, we hope to move to our permanent location at http://www.humboldtvillage.org
(don’t go looking there just yet, watch for our announcement).

I am heartened to see your endeavor. We are isolated individuals, seeking ourselves. We are compelled, at times, to find ourselves in others who reaffirm us that we are each other. We are all mirrors of the thing we are trying to become. Community is the thing.
